Garden Watering Timers Compared: Mechanical, Preset or Programmable?

Buy a watering timer for the control you need, rather than the largest feature list. A mechanical shut-off can suit watering you start yourself. Repeated automatic watering needs a controller that starts sessions on a schedule. Those are different purchases.

The practical answer

Choose a mechanical timer for one-off countdown watering, a preset controller for a limited routine, or a programmable model when you need specific days, starts and durations. Check tap thread, pressure range and manual override before the interface.

Useful product route: Compare a Hozelock 2210 mechanical controller, a Hozelock 2220 Select controller or GARDENA Flex and Select controls once you know whether you need countdown, preset or fully programmable operation.

Manufacturer examples worth checking

Hozelock describes its Mechanical Controller 2210 as a manually set timer of up to 120 minutes, without batteries. Its Select Controller 2220 is battery powered and offers 16 preset programmes. They solve different tasks: the mechanical option still needs somebody to start the watering.

GARDENA’s water-control range includes Flex for short watering cycles and Select for three different irrigation schedules. The UK Flex product page currently labels the listed model as a legacy model, so check the exact UK version, retailer availability and current replacement options before ordering. A familiar product name alone is not enough to identify the specification.

What does your schedule need?

Selection questions, not a recommended watering schedule.

Write down the shortest session you need, how many starts per day, whether you need selected weekdays and how you want to pause for rain. Compare those requirements with the manual. A timer with a long maximum session can still be unsuitable if its minimum duration is too long for your application.

Check the water supply and tap

Confirm the permitted operating pressure and flow, the tap thread, outlet connection and any filtration or pressure-reduction requirements. Do not assume a battery-powered tap controller works with a low-pressure water butt. Electrical power does not establish hydraulic compatibility.

Read the timer selection checklist for the installation checks, and our inlet equipment comparison before assembling a drip system.

One outlet or separate zones?

A single outlet supplies its connected branches together. If greenhouse pots and outdoor beds need independent schedules, look for equipment that explicitly provides the required independent control. A splitter or T-piece does not add automatic zone timing. Use our zone planning guide to define the requirement before buying.

Test the actual automatic cycle

A manual ‘water now’ test checks only part of the setup. Watch a scheduled start and stop, confirm the clock and programme, and check representative dripper output. Fit fresh batteries where required and arrange someone to check the system during an extended absence. See our holiday watering checklist.
