When buying irrigation tube, the diameter printed in a listing is only the start. Check whether it describes the outside, inside or nominal size, then match the tube with the manufacturer’s fittings. A small mismatch can create leaks, difficult assembly or connections that pull apart.

The practical answer

Buy tubing and fittings as one verified system family. A 4 mm, 4.6 mm or 13 mm label does not prove cross-brand compatibility; identify whether the listing states internal, external or nominal diameter before ordering.

Useful product route: After confirming the system family, compare Hozelock 4 mm micro tube or GARDENA 4.6 mm supply pipe. Do not treat those sizes as interchangeable.

Identify your system before making a shopping list

Use the pipe and fitting compatibility guide to identify the product family and connection method. If replacing unknown tubing, record the details in our measurement guide first. This page then turns that identified system into a parts list: it does not treat 4 mm, 4.6 mm or 13 mm as cross-brand compatibility guarantees.

Turn the layout into a parts list

Main routeMeasure supply length and corners.
BranchesCount take-offs and outlet positions.
EndsAdd plugs, supports and maintenance access.
A purchasing checklist. Pipe limits and required fitting positions depend on the selected system.

Sketch each route, then list the fitting at every junction. A straight connector joins a route; a T-piece creates a branch; an end cap closes an open end. Include outlet supports, any manufacturer-required punch or assembly tool, and connections at the inlet.

Hozelock identifies its 4 mm T-piece as reference 7025. Use that manufacturer reference when checking a retailer’s branch-fitting listing. That creates a physical branch, not unlimited flow capacity or an independent timed zone. Check the combined outlet demand before extending a layout.

A parts-list worksheet

Record for each itemWhat to enter
Pipe or componentManufacturer, range and exact reference
Quantity requiredMeasured route length or counted junctions/outlets
Pack quantityHow many fittings or metres the selected pack contains
Compatibility evidenceManufacturer page naming the mating component
Delivered costRequired packs, delivery and any missing inlet/end parts

What costs less overall?

Compare delivered cost for the full list. A mixed bargain pack may contain many fittings you do not need, while omitting the inlet adapter or end plugs you do. Check the quantity of each fitting, tube length, model references and the seller’s return terms.

Keeping one documented range can make replacements easier. If adapting an existing range, use a specified adapter and confirm both sides; avoid forcing a near-fitting connector into tube. Read pipe sizes and fitting principles for the compatibility checks.

Retailer search starting points

Compare Hozelock 4 mm tube on Amazon · Find Hozelock 7025 T-pieces · Compare GARDENA 4.6 mm pipe · Compare GARDENA 13 mm pipe

Search results can contain other brands and sizes. Check the exact listing, rather than ordering from the result title alone.

Inspect after installation

Keep debris out of open tube, follow assembly instructions and flush where required. Run the system and inspect new joints before concealing them. If a joint leaks, identify the cause instead of compensating with extra runtime. Our leaking connection guide helps with the checks.
